What is Broadband?

Broadband means a high-speed, ‘always-on’ connection to the Internet. It is up to 10 times faster than a dial-up 56K modem enabling you to view web content and download files more quickly. It's called broadband because it has a much broader capacity to receive and send data. It is also reffered to as ADSL, DSL, xDSL.

What does ADSL stand for?

Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line, it is another term for broadband.

What do Kbps and Mbps mean?

Kbps mean Kilobit per second and Mbps means Megabits per second. The speed of an Internet connection is measured in ‘bits per second’. One Kilobit is one thousand bits and one Megabit is one million bits (or a thousand Kilobits).These speeds may also be represented as K or Kb, and M or Mb.

What is Contention?

Is the ratio to which the available bandwidth is shared between users. All DSL World Home connections are 50:1 contention ratio, meaning the bandwidth may be shared with up to 50 other subscribers. All Business DSL connections are 20:1 contention.

What is bandwidth?

This is the amount of data that can be transferred to your computer while connected to the Internet for a given time. The higher your bandwidth while connected to the Internet, the more data can pass through the network, web pages will load quicker and downloads to be uploaded will be quicker.

How do I choose the service that’s right for me?

In order to pick the right package for you, you need to be clear in your mind what you will be using DSL for.

A speed of 512 kbs is ideal for general surfing and emailing. However, if you are downloading a lot of material or sending very large files, it will be better to choose a connection with higher capacity. Our Customer Care team are happy help you make the right decision, Call us now on $phone.

How can I find out if DSL World ADSL is available in my area?

To check what services are available to you simply click on the order now button type in the phone number that you want to connect into the Availability checker and this will tell you which connections you can have.

Are there any data limits with the service?

We place no restrictions on our broadband services unlike many competitors, its totally unlimited.

Am I charged for the time my computer is online?

No. With DSLWorld you'll pay a fixed amount each month, no matter how often you use it.

Is there a set-up/installation charge?

If you sign up for a 12 month contract there is a £58.75 one off setup fee on new ADSL accounts. To migrate over from another ISP the connection fee is £14.89.

How long is the contract?

We offer two DSL packages, a 12 month contract and a 30 day contract.

What happens if I move house?

If you moved house you would need to pay another connection fee, but you can remain stay on the same contract.

I need advice on my children using the Internet, where can i find it?

The Home Office have created a document entitled Parents' guide to safety on the Internet to help parents out, after all the Internet can be an invaluable tool for your child’s education and development.

How long does it take to activate my ADSL?

What equipment do I need to get ADSL?

Essentially all you need is a computer, which meets the minimum requirements, a suitable phone line, a broadband modem or router, and micro-filter.

We can provide you with all hardware needed - just ask when you order.

What is a router?

A router is a small box that allows several computers to share a broadband connection to the Internet simultaneously by way of an 'Ethernet' connection. A router typically offers more advanced features than a modem, including security services such as a NAT or SPI firewall.

What is a micro-filter?

A micro filter splits the voice and data signals on your phone line, so you enjoy surfing the Net whilst using your phone at the same time (unlike, for instance, a dial-up internet connection). You will need a micro filter for each phone socket that is connected to telephone (or fax) equipment.

What is a modem?

A modem is a small box (or slot-in card) that connects your computer by way of a 'USB' connection to your phone socket (via a micro filter) thereby enabling connection to your broadband service.

Do I get an Email account?

Free email is included with the BUSINESS connections only.

Do I get any webspace included?

Webspace is included with the BUSINESS connections only.

Do your prices include VAT?

All the Home Connections include VAT, the business connections exclude VAT.

What payment methods do you accept?

The initial connection fee needs to be paid via credit card, your monthly connection can be paid either by DD or you can continue to use your credit card. We do not accept cheques as a payment method.

Do I still have to pay BT line rental if I get Broadband?

Yes. BT's telephone billing (line rental and call charges) are unrelated to your DSL. You will however not have to make any calls to the Internet, as the Broadband is an always-on connection.
